How to Write A College Application Essay

So you’ve made the huge decision of applying to college!

That’s huge! 

As someone who has applied to numerous colleges and has attended both undergraduate and graduate school, I am here to help. I’m not claiming to be an expert and I am in no way saying that a good essay will get you into college (there are definitely other factors that can help or hinder the overall decision), but some structure and guidance may help tip the scales in your favor. Thus, I commend you for doing research and stumbling onto my page. 

Let’s talk about essays. 

For the essay portion they will likely ask you to write about an obstacle or unique experience that has shaped you into who you are today. 

In order to tackle this, I am going to recommend a structure that helps make writing this type of essay simple and fast. 

Introduction:

1. Hook the Reader:

   • Begin with a captivating anecdote, quote, question, or statement to grab the reader's attention.

2. Introduce Yourself:

   • Briefly introduce who you are, mentioning your name, interests, and perhaps a defining experience.

3. Thesis Statement:

   • State the central theme or message you want to convey in your essay. This is essentially your "thesis" for the essay.

Body Paragraphs (2-3 paragraphs):

4. Tell a Story:

   • Share a personal story or experience that illustrates your thesis. Be specific and use vivid details to paint a picture for the reader.

5. Reflect and Connect:

   • Reflect on the significance of the story and connect it to your personal growth, values, or aspirations.

6. Address Challenges (if applicable):

   • If you've overcome challenges, discuss them, emphasizing what you've learned and how it has shaped you.

Conclusion:

   • Recap the main points discussed in your essay.

8. Reiterate Thesis:

   • Reinforce your thesis or the central message of your essay.

  • If possible, showcase personal growth, emphasizing how experiences have shaped you.
